5 Tech Trends Shaping Public Sector IT
Public sector technology priorities are always shifting. At Southern Computer Warehouse (SCW), our customers (state, local government, and educational public sector organizations) are making purchasing decisions that reveal bigger trends in how they work, secure, and serve their communities and students. Here’s what the numbers tell us about tech trends as we head towards the last quarter 2025; Mobility, resilience, security, and visual collaboration are leading the trends.
- Mobility is King
Notebooks represent the single-largest category % of total tech spend so far in 2025 by our public sector customers, more than all desktops and servers combined. Mobility is the new standard. This reflects the realities of hybrid work, field inspections, and on-the-go education support.
- Resilience is Non-Negotiable
UPS & Power Devices make up over 10% of customer IT equipment spending with us, highlighting a growing commitment to operational continuity. Whether it’s protecting data centers or ensuring classroom uptime, backup power is part of the baseline infrastructure.
- Software is Getting Specialized
While Software accounts for nearly 15% of total purchases by our public sector customers, the majority of that is concentrated in niche, application-specific tools. Our state and local government customers are investing in targeted solutions that address unique mission requirements rather than broad, generic platforms.
- Security is the “Must-Have”
The fact that Video Surveillance equipment has surpassed printer-related purchases is telling. From K-12 campuses to municipal facilities, public safety technology is moving up the priority list not just as a security measure, but as a community trust initiative.
- Displays are Outshining Printers
With Monitors now equaling Printer Consumables in customer spend so far this year, visual collaboration and real-time monitoring are clearly on the rise. This shift is being driven by cost savings over time, control room upgrades, and an overall move toward digital-first engagement.
The message is clear so far in 2025, public sector IT is evolving toward mobility, resilience, security, and visual collaboration. At SCW, we’re here to help our state and local government customers navigate these shifts, delivering the right tech to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.
